Fostering academic success in a child is a major task for any caregiver. For kinship guardians who may not have been in the caregiver role for quite some time, the school experience can be overwhelming. Fostering Family is here to help kin guardians navigate the school process, connect with resources, adjust to online and hybrid learning models, and promote scholastic success.
EDUCATION FOR PARENTS OF INDIAN CHILDREN WITH SPECIAL NEEDS (EPICS)
Epic is a Community Parent Resource Center serving Native American families who support children with disabilities or developmental delays in New Mexico, including those with special healthcare needs.
GRAND FAMILIES RESOURCE SITE
A fantastic resource for statistics and education about kinship caregivers, specifically grandparents taking care of grandchildren.
THE CHILD WELFARE LEAGUE OF AMERICA
Founded in 1922, the organization is dedicated to America’s youth’s well-being, safety, and growth. This organization is also adept at helping caregivers and ensuring they have the resources they need to raise their children/grandchildren properly.
SHARE
Founded in 2013, SHARE is a comprehensive resource and information database available to all New Mexicans. Having the resources and information in its database also allows New Mexicans to share information and supports collaboration.
NEW MEXICO WORKFORCE CONNECTION
is a state-run program that helps with virtual job matching and employment resources and allows access to the unemployment insurance tax claims system, amongst other things.
NEW MEXICO EARLY CHILDHOOD EDUCATION & CARE DEPARTMENT
Created by Gov. Grisham and the New Mexico Legislature in 2019 and officially launched on July 1, 2020, this program is designed to create a more fluid early childhood system in New Mexico. This will include the entire spectrum of programs available from prenatal to age five.
PARENTS REACHING OUT
o From screening and evaluation to transitioning out of high school, PRO supports families with youth, from birth to 26 years of age, with their education concerns. Connect with a family specialist.
YMCA CENTRAL NEW MEXICO
Provides child care, education and leadership, activities, and a youth camp.
PUBLIC LIBRARIES
Public libraries are a great resource for caregivers to help connect children to books and programs/events in the community.
CULTURAL PASSES
The Department of Cultural Affairs’ FamilyPass, a partnership with local libraries throughout New Mexico, provides free admission (up to 6 people) to 15 state museums and historic sites. Don’t hesitate to contact your local library to see if this is available.
